A Parent, Educator, and Community Organizer for Saint Paul School Board
I am running for the St. Paul School Board because this is a special moment for our school district. Our community is activated around improving our schools and our School Board has made great progress in the past few years, creating a solid foundation for future growth. I am ready to build upon this work and address the inequities that persist throughout our community and our schools. I love talking with my neighbors and am excited to knock on your door to earn your support!
Both my kids attend St. Paul Public Schools. Since my son started pre-K ten years ago, I have been an active member of my kids’ school communities. In 2021 I was a lead organizer of the Save Wellstone Elementary campaign as the community successfully resisted the closure of our school. I currently serve on the PTA at Global Arts Plus and am the Chair of the Highland Park Middle School Parent Solidarity Network, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that I created. At Highland Park Middle, I help stock the food pantry and do grocery deliveries.
I am a leader in the St. Paul Public Schools Parent Solidarity Network, a district-wide grassroots campaign formed in response to Operation Metro Surge. Within this network I am both a school and region lead and was instrumental in the creation of the district-wide fundraiser that has raised over $400,000 and provided rent / mortgage assistance to help over 200 St. Paul Public School families stay in their homes. Through my work at my kids’ schools and through the larger Solidarity Network, I see both the incredible strengths of and challenges facing our St. Paul Public Schools community.
A St. Paulite via Northern Wisconsin, I live with my husband, two kids and a mini Schnauzer named Coco. I am a first generation college graduate and am currently working toward my PhD in Literacy Education at the University of Minnesota, focusing my studies on equity in education. In addition to my studies, I teach a young adult literature class at the U of M where, prior to starting my doctorate two years ago, I taught Spanish and Portuguese for 12 years.
I love to read, especially young adult literature and graphic novels, spend time up north, drink coffee and practice yoga.
